Notes

Note NI116William served in the Civil War, as a private in Company G, 75th Ohio Regiment, U.S. Army Infantry, from 31 October 1861 until 22 December 1864. He was slightly wounded at Chancellorsville and was captured at Gettysburg.

He met his second wife after being exchanged and while serving with garrison troops in Jacksonville, Florida. Family tradition has it that, after the war during which his first wife had died, William drove a horse and buggy from Ohio to Florida, married his second wife and brought her back to Ohio. She also died before him and he married a third time. He had children by all three wives.

His service record describes him as 5 feet 10 inches, dark complexed with black eyes and black hair, and that his occupation at the time of his enlistment was as a farmer. He enlisted at Camden, Ohio on 31 Oct 1861.

The record shows that he was hospitalized in Findlay Hospital, Washington, D.C. from 30 April 1862 to 31 August 1862, and was on furlough at home during May and June of 1862 (this is the way the record reports it, so he was on furlough during part of the time he was also in the hospital). Was he on furlough for illness recovery, or is this when his first wife, Nancy Johnson, died?.

He was transferred to the Commissary Department, Jacksonville, Florida in May, 1864 and served the remainder of his enlistment in that location, so he could not have been with General Sherman during his "March to the Sea," as reported in some sources.

There is disagreement concerning his birth date. Joe Blossom, in his manuscript [BLOS-0007] gives a date of 4 Jul 1829 for William's birth date, as does Jill Carther Knuth in her book, "The Stubbs Index," while William's Graves Registration Card [BLOSS-0002B] gives his birth date as 4 Jul 1831. In his pension records (see BLOS-0017) William himself at one point says his birth date was 4 Jul 1831, but there is a question mark following the date, as if he wasn't sure and, in the same document, which was dated 20 May 1912, he says he is 82 years old. If he had been born 4 Jul 1831, he would have only been 80 years old on 20 May 1812. In another document in that file, dated 6 Dec 1890, he states that he is 60 years old, therefore born in 1830. Yet another document in the file dated 16 May 1891 states that he is 60, again suggesting he was born in 1830; yet his death certificate states that he was born on 4 Jul 1831. I have elected to accept the date of 1830, because the year of 1831 would conflict with with his next younger brother, Josephus who was born 23 Jul 1831. At this .his point, I am leaving his birth date at 4 Jul 1830, with reservations.

Information in some cases has been verified by actual observation of the gravestones, but there seem to be some illogical information recorded in this document, for instance Loraine W. Blossom is recorded as "son of Josephus and Mary." This is possible, of course, but Loraine does seem to be a female name. Also, Edgar R. Blossom is recorded as having lived from 4 June 1902 to 13 Aug 1902, yet he is recorded as having a wife, Elizabeth, who lived 1869-1921! Finally, there is the case of Perry Blossom, who lived 1871-1917, but had a wife Matilda who lived 1848-1927, in other words she was 23 years older than him, very doubtful. • Source: S567 BLOSS-0017 - Civil War Pension File of William Blossom -- Publication: Unpublished Note: This file consists of several pages of documents. The earliest document in the file is dated 14 July 1890 and is William Blossom's "Declaration for Invalid Pension." The last document in the file is dated 22 Dec 1927 and is a "Drop Report - Pensioner" stating that the widow of William Blossom, Matilda J. Blossom, had been dropped from the roll because of death on 11 Dec. 1927. Repository: #R548 Call Number: Pension File #951237 Certainty: 3 Note: The first document in the file is William Blossom's original application for an invalid's pension, dated 14 Jul 1890. The last document concerning him directly was dated 27 Dec 1921, when he was dropped from the pension rolls because of death. The following pertinent documents are in this file: DATE DOCUMENT INFORMATION SHOWN 14 Jul 1890 Declaration For Invalid Pension Filed in Butler County, Ohio, states William Blossom is a resident of Somerville, Butler County, Ohio, that he was enrolled on the 31 day of October 1861 in Copany "G" 75 regiment of Ohio Infantry Volunteers in the War of the Rebellion and served three years, Honorably Discharge at Columbus, Ohio on 22 Dec 1864. At the time of filing for his pension he claimed to be suffering from "Catarrh of the head and Asthma and other complications of disease." 6 Dec 1890 Claimant's Affidavit In which William Blossom states that he is over 60 years old, has five children living at home, the youngest being 2 and 1/2 CONCyears old. 16 May 1891 Claimant's Affidavit In which William Blossom states that he contacted Rheumatism while serving at or near Jacksonville, Florida, and also Catarrh at the same place about the First of March 1864 and asthma about the same time. He further stated that he had "rendered military service...[at] Parkersburg W.Va. Montery, Shan's Ridge, McDowell, Franklin, Strausburgh, Cross Keys, Cedar Mountain, Freemans ford, Sulphur Springs, and many other places, 22 in all." 3 Jun 1898 Response to Questions In this document William Blossom states that he is married, to Mrs. Matilda Jane McBride. They were married on 30 Mar 1875 at Covington, Kenton Co., Ky. He further stated that he had been previously married to Nancy Johnson who died May 1862 in Somerville, Ohio. He also named six of his children and their birth dates: Alemer [?] Oct 1853, Hattie, Feb 1865, Elmer Feb 1878, Perry May 1880, Grant July 1885, CONCand Alice 1887. [These children are confusing. I have no idea who the first one might be, since it bears no resemblance to any of his known children. Hattie is probably Hannah Blossom a daughter by his first wife, but if so, the birth date given is over ten years later than any other records show, and his first wife had died in 1862. Elmer, Perry, Grant and Alice were all children by his third wife, and were probably all still living with him in 1898, but Elmer's birth date isn't correct.] 20 May 1912 Declaration For Pension In this document William Blossom declared himself to be 82 years of age. He gives his physical description at the time of his enlistment in the military as: Height 5'10", Dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, and that he was a farmer, born at Somerville, Butler County, Ohio on 4 Jul 1831 [a question mark followed the year given, he wasn't sure?]. He also stated that he was a pensioner under certificate No. CONC624930. 28 Dec 1921 Drop Report This document shows William Blossom being dropped from the pension rolls on 13 Dec 1921 "because of death." Also included in the file was a copy of a marriage certificate dated 30 Mar 1875, signed by W. L. Manson, J.K.K.C. certifying the marriage of William Blossom to Mrs. Matilda Jane McBride at Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky.
