Ed Bly grew up in Shelby County, Illinois, and after he and Esther married they lived there until about 1907 when they moved to Assumption in neighboring Christian County. He did farm work and after 1910 worked for the railroad. He was partially paralyzed after a fall from a freight car and was an invalid for several years before died in the flu epidemic of 1918-1919.
