Matthew was baptised on 17 July 1859 in Grappenhall, Cheshire, England. He was the son of Richard Boardman and Elizabeth Acton.
When Matthew was 26 he married Mary Jane Renshaw in June 1886 in Barton Upon Irwell, Lancashire. The couple had one child: Elizabeth Boardman.
In the 1891 census Matthew (age 31) was the son of Richard Boardman in Eccles, Barton upon Irwell, Lancashire, England.[1]
