In May 1940, Glen joined the Royal Australian Air Force and after training as a mechanical engineer, was sent to England and the Middle East where he joined with U.S.A.F. (United States Air Force) flying Liberator Bombers out of Benghazi in Libya.
Glen returned to Australia to work on modifications to the DeHavilon Mosquito, for jungle warfare.
Whilst still serving overseas, Glen’s wife Elizabeth, known as Betty, died. Fortunately Glen’s sister Lila was now living in Sydney and was able to take care of Martin, who required frequent visits to the Camperdown Children’s Hospital for operations and treatment for a hip deformity, so Lila made sure he had the best of care.
Martin was about nine years old when his father returned from the war.
Soon after his return Glen married Irene Peel Fareclough. Glen took Irene and Martin to live in Mount Gambier in South Australia, where he was employed as a motor mechanic.
In 1957 Irene died, and is buried in the Mount Gambier Cemetery.
Several years later, Glen met a widow named Olive Badden (née Johns), and they married. Olive who had several children from her previous marriage, continued to live in Mount Gambier after Glen died in 1991, aged 78.
Glen’s niece, June, who lives in New Zealand, kept in touch with Glen until he died.
