Biography

Johnathan Boice was born in Cambridge, Washington County, New York on 19 December 1824. He was the son of Johnathon Boice (England) and Nancy Harrington (New York, United States).[1]

Johnathan Boice first appeared in the New York, U.S. State Census of 1855 at Jackson, Washington County, New York. He was listed as a 22 year old farmer born in Vermont, who had lived in Jackson for 9 months. He was living in a house valued at 200, with his wife Ruth and their son Winfield.[2]

Johanthan Boice appeared at Jackson again for the 1860 census, as a 29 year old farm laborer, this time born in New York. He had real estate valued at 500 and a personal estate valued at 100. He was living with his wife Ruby, and their children Winfield, Adelaide and Barton.[3]

Johnathan moved his family to Michigan sometime before 1865. This estimate is based on the birthdate of his son Edgar. In the 1870 census Johnathan Boice appeared in Nankin Township, Wayne County, as a 40 year old farmer born in New York. He had real estate valued at 2000, and a personal estate valued at 600. He was living with his wife and six children.[4]

Johnathan was still in Nankin Township for the 1880 census, and was recorded as a 50 year old farmer born in New York. He was living with his wife and five children.[5]

Johnathan's wife Ruby Temple died in 1889.

Johnathan was listed in the household of his son in law, Lawrence Penny for the 1910 census at Detroit, Wayne County Michigan. He was listed as an 82 year old widower, born in New York. He was able to read and write, and was living with his son in law, his daughter Leida, two grand children and a boarder.[6]
