Biography

Hannah Fish Bonney was born on 27 December 1814 in Hanson, Plymouth County, Massachusetts USA. She was the daughter of Harvey Bonney and his wife, Hannah (Fish) Bonney. [1]

Hannah (Fish) Bonney married Humphrey Larrabee Snow (1814-1894) of Cumberland County, Maine, on 17 October 1839 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA. Rev. William W. Rogers officiated. [2] [3] Hannah Fish Bonney had been born in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Their daughter, Amelia Frances Snow, was born at their home in Boston on 22 March 1843.[4]

By the time of the 1850 US Census, Humphrey and Hannah Snow had moved to Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA. They were recorded there as married, 32 and 31 years old, living with their daughter: Amelia F. Snow, 7 years old. Humphrey L. Snow's occupation was: "Trader". [5]

Ten years later, the 1860 US Census recorded "H.L. Snow" as 40 years old, still living in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with his wife "H.F. Snow, age 38, and 2 children: "A.F. Snow," 17; and "W.H." [William Harvey] Snow, 6 years old. Humphrey L. Snow's profession was now "Auctioneer" and his property & personal possessions were valued at $3,600 US dollars. [6]

The 1870 US Census recorded Humphrey L. Snow as 55 years old, married to Hannah F Snow, age 54; they were still living in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, with their 2 children: Frances Snow, single, age 26, and William H. Snow, 16 years old and "In School". They had an Irish-born maid, Mary Roach, 25 years old, in the household. Humphrey L. Snow's occupation was "Merchant" and his property and personal goods were now valued at $7,000 US dollars. [7]

On 13 September 1870, Humphrey & Hannah's daughter, Amelia Frances Snow, age 27, married James Birney Alden, 29 years old, in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts. [8] Unfortunately, Amelia (Snow) Alden died just 5 years later, on 29 August 1875 at 32 years, 5 months 7 days old. She and her husband had no children. [9]

The 1880 US Census recorded Humphrey L. Snow as a 65-year-old white male, born in Maine; he was married to Hannah F. Snow, 64 years old, born in Massachusetts. They were still living in their house in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA, with their now-26-year-old son: William H. Snow, single. Their household also included another family, that of William L. Barney [sic=Bonney], age 50, and his wife, Caroline "Barney," 42 years old. They were Humphrey L. Snow's brother and sister-in-law. They had 2 adult children living with them: Avonia Barney [Bonney]: 24; and Erma Barney [Bonney]: 21 years old. The family also had a live-in Irish-born maid: Katie Murphy: age 21, in residence. Humphrey L. Snow's occupation was "Dry Goods Merchant," while his son and brother-in-law were both "Clerks in Store". Avonia Barney was a "Professional Singer". [10]

The 1890 US Census was accidentally destroyed and not available. On 19 December 1893, Hannah Frances (Bonney) Snow passed away at 77 years old in Cambridge, Massachusetts of a heart attack. She was called a "Housewife" on her death record.[11] [12] Hannah was buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA; plot: Amaranth Path, Lot 3821. [13]

Humphrey Larrabee Snow followed his wife of 54 years to the grave just 3 weeks later on 4 January 1894 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts. He was 79 years, 4 months & 3 days old. His cause of death was "Cerebral Hemorrhage" or stroke. His death record states he was a "Bookkeeper" by profession, but the Census records show he was an accomplished businessman. [14] [15] Humphrey Larrabee Snow was buried next to his recently-deceased wife at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA; plot: Amaranth Path 5984, space 2. [16]
