Research Notes

The name of DORCAS POPE was given on the 1896 Petition of ALFRED RICHARDSON JR. and his siblings, in their claims to the Dawes Commission, where they stated that their grandparents were HARDIE RICHARDSON & DORCAS POPE. However, in the same 1896 Petitions, a RICHARDSON FAMILY CHART was submitted and sworn to by more than a dozen family members that DORCAS/DARCAS' maiden name was BOONE. In particular, in the petition of WILLIAM BOONE, b. 1854, he stated that his mother was CAROLINE BOONE, and that she and DARCAS RICHARDSON, wife of HARDIE, were the daughters of LEWIS BOONE. I don't know why the discrepancies for DORCAS' maiden name, however, I am more inclined to believe the name was BOONE because there was a long term relationship between the 2 families over the years and the fact that the BOONE Petition includes the name of DARCAS' father. Perhaps POPE was the surname of DORCAS' mother, the RICHARDSON and associated families in Halifax were often interchangeably using their mothers maiden names in various records.
