Edward Bootle-Wilbraham was born in Blythe Hall, Lathom, Lancashire on 12 December 1837 [1], and was baptised on 9 January 1838 in Ormskirk, he was the son of The Hon. Richard Bootle-Wilbraham, Member of Parliament for South Lancashire, and his wife Jessy Brooke [2]
In 1841, he was living with his paternal grandfather Lord Skelmersdale at the family London residence 55, Portland Place, Marylebone, Middlesex. Edward's parents and siblings were also included in the household

Edward was firstly educated at Eton College, where he was shown as a pupil in 1851 [4]

His father Richard died in 1844, aged only 42, and when his grandfather died on 3 April 1853, Edward succeeded to the title of Lord Skelmersdale. He was only 15 years old, and by the age of 21 he was entitled to take his seat in the House of Lords.
He went on to study at Christ Church College, Oxford.
Edward married Alice Villiers, on 16 August 1860 in St Paul, Wilton Place, Middlesex. Edward signed the register as Lord Skelmersdale, Alice was shown as the daughter of George William Frederick Villiers, the Earl of Clarendon[6]
In 1861, Edward and his new wife were living at 11 Princes Gate, Westminster

From 1866-1868, Edward served as Lord-in-waiting, from 1870, he became Conservative Chief whip in the House of Lords, and by 1874 he was a member of the Privy Council.

In 1880, Edward was created Earl of Lathom, and he later went on to receive the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath.
The 1881 census showed Edward and his wife Alice as the guests of the Earl of Lytton at Knebworth House in Hertfordshire

Edward died at Lathom House, Ormskirk on 19 November 1898, he was 60 years old [11]
He was buried in the family vault of St John's Chapel in Lathom on 23 November 1898 [12]
Probate of his estate (which was valued at £147,527 13s 4d) was granted to the right honourable Frederick Arthur, earl of Derby, K.G. and G.C.B.; and the right honourable Edward Hyde, earl of Clarendon [13]
