Biography

Robert Borthistle was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)
Robert Borthistle is an Anzac who served in World War One.

Robert was born in 1893. He was the son of William Borthistle and Marie Modrzynski. In 1915 he enlisted to serve in WW1 - his employment at this time was recorded as "Drover". He was wounded at Gallipoli serving with the 1st Light Horse, and was sent initially to Malta but then to Brighton, England for recovery in November 1915. In 1916 he was sent to Alexandria. He was wounded again in 1917, and suffered diphtheria. He returned to Australia from Egypt in 1919. In 1922 he married Florence Annie Ruth MATTHEWS. For a while in the 1950s they lived at the Silver Hill property near Kiama. [1] Robert passed away in 1979.

Trooper Borthistle (severely wounded, and in hospital, Malta) was well known in Gunnedah, where his father (Sub-Inspector Borthistle, now retired) was for 20 years in charge of the police. Trooper Borthistle, who is 22 years of age, was formerly employed on one of Mr. J. H. Mackay's stations.
