There is a much more detailed description of the area and its history here: http://www.jstor.org/stable/274907

It talks about the area around LeDroit and Howard University as an alternative to the alley dwellings.

Yes, that area was the current LeDroit Park -which changed drastically, as did the entire area around Howard University, during the 1920s.

The Black Elite began to move into the area around T st, NW and into L.Park near Anna Cooper's house in the 30's if memory serves, but the area between Dupont Circle and Howard was contested in the White and Colored press from the turn of the century until the 1930s. The neighborhood was in transition, and alley dwellings were being removed all over the city. But that house is not an alley dwelling. It still makes sense that 212 1/2 may have been one of the small alley dwellings demolished by the Commission, but you're right that it could also have been shared by several families. If Joe Bourke Sr. was a post carrrier as mom said, then his wages were relatively high for that time, no? Shira

It looks like they were living in LeDroit Park. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LeDroit_Park

" I would assume the four entrances were numbered. 212, 212 1/2, 214, and 214 1/2 at the time. "

While that is possible, what I recall of DC at the time (of course this is well before I was born) is that Alley Dwellings were all over the place before the Commission removed them and renumbered the streets. The family seems to have been poor enough at that point that it's possible, but I'd like to agree with you and hope that it wasn't that bad (but my mom's memories of rats in the rafters when she grew up negate that hope a bit...). I will have to go back through some old maps of DC when I have the chance. I forget where they are listed now, but Streets of DC (or Streets of Washington?) was a good blog with srcs of old maps of DC. Shira

This looks to be 212 Elm St. (http://bit.ly/1A4Nj8L)

Built in 1908 according to Zillow. (http://bit.ly/1CpBsAr)

It has four separate entrances, and the next building is 216. I would assume the four entrances were numbered. 212, 212 1/2, 214, and 214 1/2 at the time.

Residence: "212 1/2 Elm St. NW"

1/2 streets in DC were generally alleys. Could they have lived in an Alley Dwelling when they first arrived?  :-( -ShiraDestinie
