Glenn George Bowes was born on 18 September 1919 in South Dakota. He was the second of two children born to George Willard Bowes and his wife, Lucy Anne "Anna" (LaFave) Bowes. He had an older brother named Roy.

When Glenn was only four months old, his father died. His mother worked as a practical nurse to raise her two young sons. In adulthood, Glenn became a doctor of chiropractic.

On 14 Feb 1942, Glenn married Dorothy Inez Wayne, the daughter of Jasper Wayne and his wife, Ida (Root) Wayne, in Los Angeles County, California.

Glenn died on 29 April 1996 in College Place, Walla Walla County, Washington. He was laid to rest in the Mount Hope Cemetery in College Place, Washington. On his gravestone, it reads "S Sgt US Army, World War II."
