James was born in 1804. He passed away in 1874.
U.S. Congressman. Receiving a classical education, he was a school teacher, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1826 and commenced to practice law in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1833. He established the Farmers and Mechanics’ Advocate, was a member of the Missouri State House of Representatives, (1836-37), District Attorney for St. Louis, in 1837 and judge of the criminal court, (1839-42). In 1843, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1851. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed by President Pierce Minister Resident to New Granada, in 1854 and later appointed by President Buchanan commissioner to Paraguay, (1858-59). He then resumed the practice of law until his death at age 70.
