Smith W. Bowling was born on 5 May 1921, son of Jimmie Green Bowling (1888–1960) and Bettie Cleo Patterson (1889– ).

Smith married Eva Tapp (born on 26 Jan 1926). Their daughter was Carolyn Bowling (25 Aug 1956 – 17 May 1958).
Smith died on 20 Sep 2014, aged 93. He was buried in Hebron Cemetery, Yum Yum, Fayette County, Tennessee.[1]
