Mary's origins are in some doubt. A Marie Bormann who immigrated in 1875 from Germany at the age of 8[1] is said to be a daughter of Mary Anna Black and the daughter who married Tim Ryan.[2] The immigration data puts her birth about 1867. However, her headstone says 1876, which puts her birth in Nebraska, not Germany. Census records are consistent with this. She would be the daughter of Juliana Carolina (Schwartz) Daudt (1842-1931).
Her marriage record names parents, but does not help to resolve her origin.
Mary married Timothy Ryan on 14 July 1894 in Kearney, Buffalo, Nebraska, United States.[3] Her mother is given as Coraline Black, not quite matching either Mary Black or Carolina Schwarz. The marriage record gives an estimated birth year of 1875.
Mary's life after marriage is better documented. The 1900 census shows her with Timothy and their first two sons in Montana. Her birth date is given as Aug 1875.[4]
In 1910 she was living with her husband and the first 3 of their four children in Tacoma, their home for many years.[5] 1920 shows the last 3 children, as William has moved on. Her birthplace is given as Nebraska in both cases.[6]

I visited family near Mary's home with her grandson, my father, in 1964. Mary would have died about 6 months before our visit. I don't remember any mention of her, but I was just a small boy and the family was not one to dwell on the past. Both of my grandparents on that side were already gone. I did meet her son and daughter ("Uncle Mark" and "Aunt Bessie" to my father) at various times.
