This profile is part of the Boyd Name Study.

John Boyd was born before 1660 in Ayrshire, Scotland. [citation needed] His parentage is currently unknown.[1]

On February 26, 1683, in Anne Arundel County, he received the first warrant for land. He soon moved to Prince George's County, and settled on his estate 'Amptill Grange', a tract of nearly a thousand acres granted to him by Charles, third Lord Baltimore, September 16, 1703. John Boyd was a prominent man in his day, and while not having held public office, was called upon to discharge duties involving grave responsibility. He was part of Grand Jury of 24 prominent gentlemen of Prince George's County that reported on matters to the British Crown.[2]

John (25) married Mary Unknown (21) (born before 1664 in Ayrshire) in 1686 [citation needed] in Anne Arundel, Maryland.

Leroy Stafford Boyd, the eldest son of descendant David French Boyd, wrote biographical sketches of the early Boyds. Of the John Boyd of this profile, he wrote:[3][1]

John Boyd, emigrant, planter, innholder, Episcopalian, settled on the Severn River, above Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, in 1684 on 60 acores which he patented from the Proprietary Government. The settlement was known as "Boyd's Chance". In 1694 he bought a tract of 1000 acres on the Patuxent River, in the new county of Prince Georges, nine miles north of Upper Marlboro, the county seat. His wife Mary ____ (maiden name unknown). He died in 1704, she in 1722. Both left wills which were probated at Upper Marlboro. Copies of these wills are at the Land Office in Annapolis. Children:

Research Notes

From Side-Lights on Maryland History, v.2, pp. 269-70:[5]

In the will of Mary, wife of John Boyd, proved in the year 1722, it is shown that their daughter Martha married Thomas Wells. The high social status of the family is proven by the intermarriages of the sons and daughters of John Boyd. Of these John Boyd married Elinor Fitz- Redmond, niece of Charles Carroll, first of the Carrolls of Carrollton in Maryland, the marriage being recorded in All Hallows Parish Register, Anne Arundel County, page 72, dated March 28, 1706. The proof of the relationship to Charles Carroll is to be found in his will, dated December 1, 1718, proved July 28, 1720 (Annapolis Wills, Liber 16, folio 176) as follows:
I devise unto my four kinswomen Elinor Boyd, Margaret Macknamarra, Joyce Bradford and Maccoy, my tract of land in Baltimore County called 'Uncle's Good Will' to be equally divided betwixt them and their heirs forever, and to my kinswomen Johanna Crokesdell, five pounds current money, and to my cousin Major John Bradford sixteen pounds to buy him a mourning shute. "I give to my loving kinsmen Thomas Macnemarra, James Carroll, William Fitzredmond, Charles Carroll, Dominick Carroll, Michael Taylor and Daniel Carroll six pounds each for mourning rings.
