Biography

Joseph Boyd was born 7 February 1846, in Gore, Quebec, Canada, his parents were Joseph Boyd, and Jane Hammond. He married Elizabeth Christie on 26 February 1874, in Gore, Quebec, Canada. They had children, including, Margaret Bertha Christie Boyd, (1876–1963); Albert Joseph Boyd, (1878–19390); Lydia Jane Boyd, (1881–1976); Stafford Joseph David Boyd, (1886–1967); and Alma Elizabeth Boyd.

Joseph's daughter contributed to a history[1] of the Lacombe, Alberta region, which can be found online. The chapter on Eureka Valley includes History of Eureka Valley by Henry Lembicz, which (pp 83-85, slides 95-97) outlines the June 1902 introduction of Mrs. Boyd to the homestead. Their daughter Lydia (Mrs. N.E. Carruthers) also provided her account (p 85-86, slides 97-98) of how they came to Alberta from Québec. In brief, after the Lacombe minister retired in 1900, a replacement was assigned who happened to live near the Boyd farm in Québec. Bertha, interested in teaching, asked him to keep an eye out for opportunities, which he did. After she moved out, she convinced her brother Albert to come out in the spring of 1901. Joseph visited in the fall of 1901 and they each filed for a homestead: "C.P.R. North 1/2 of 27-38-26-4 and SW 1/4 of 33-38-26-4". (See Research Notes.) In the spring of 1902, they sold the property in Compton, Québec and moved out west.

According to Lydia's history (pg 86, slide 98), Joseph "died April 30, 1905 from being kicked by a horse that [she] had been driving."

Research Notes

  • The original version of this page cites http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/AMTCitationRedir.aspx?tid=16650412&pid=538850942 which gives me an error message (not found). Christensen-10437 15:35, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
    • also Marriage: 26 Feb. 1874; Gore, Argenteuil, Quebec, Canada
  • The text of [1] (pg 86, slide 98) seems to change author voice from Lydia back to Henry Lembicz in the paragraph that begins, "Mrs. Boyd was my teacher for one term about 1915."
  • The memories in [1] (pp 83-86) give several colorful anecdotes of their journey as well as several dates of significance. These should be incorporated into the family pages.
  • Although [1] cites the homesteads as 27-38-26-4 and 33-38-26-4, the next page quotes Albert's daughter, Isabel, as claiming he settled 28-37-26-4.
    • According to the Provincial Archives of Alberta Homestead records, these numbers do not register in the search index.
      • I searched on "Joseph" "Boyd" and they suggest: 28-38-25-4, PAA Ref. Acc. 1970.313, Film 2076, File 649580. This plot lists 10 other people with no names that I recognize from the history.
      • I searched on "Albert James" "Boyd" and they suggest: 28-38-26-4, PAA Ref. Acc. 1970.313, Film 2745, File 1159110. This plot lists the following people:
        • BOYD, "Albert James"
        • BOYD, "Elizabeth"
        • BOYD, "Joseph (died 1905)" [given name includes the parenthetic comment]
        • CAIRNS, "John A" [likely related to George Cairns, the minister who previously lived near the Boyd farm in Québec]
        • JENKINS, "Henry Loftus"
        • SAWYER, "Eugene William" [mentioned in Lydia's history as coming out west with Joseph and Albert in 1901]
    • I did not pay the $10 service fee (plus $.50/page) for the documentation. Somebody else might wish to do so. The note indicates it is available through Ancestry.
    • Maps:
      • If I am reading these maps (1915[2] and 1917[3]) correctly, their homestead is south of Lacombe, very close to (and a little east of) Red Deer. (28 along the bottom, 38 vertically; roughly in the vicinity of 52.5 N 113.9 W)
      • If I am reading this map[4] correctly, their homestead is at the southeast end of Snake Lake (just west of Red Deer), still south of Lacombe. XXVIII across and 38 up. (52.3 N to the east side of the Fifth Meridian [114 W])
      • There are mounted police stations[5] in Lacombe and Red Deer in 1904.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

Very nice page about Joseph Jr. I am descended from his brother Nathaniel. The photograph is wonderful. Are there any other photos of the siblings or other family members of your Joseph? I have none. Thank you.
