Biography

James was born in 1873 according to the 1881 Census^[1] in Bothwell, Lanarkshire. He was the son of Thomas Boyle and Helen Braclin.

In 1881 James (age about 8) was living in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland.^[1] with his parents and siblings Patrick, Mary and Rose Ann. They were living at Double Dandy Row, Carfin. The housing was owned by the mining company William Dixon Ltd and was one of 8 apartments, described in 1910 as having no damp proofing, solid walla with floors below ground level. There were no gardens, washouses and no coal cellars 1 toilet to every 4 houses. Housing Conditions of Miners

In 1891 James (age about 18) was living in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.^[2] He is now a coal miner like his father and his younger brother Patrick, Mary and Rose Ann are now at school, as are younger siblings Thomas, Andrew and Michael. There were also two further siblings under school age living in the house at Red Rows Joseph aged 2 and Ellen aged under 1.

In 1901 James (age about 28) was living in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.^[3] at 48 Albert Buildings, his occupation was discribed as a Coal Miner Hewer . In this house are living a total of 13 people, James and his parents pluse Rose Ann, Thomas, and Andrew who are also Coal Miner Hewers. In December of 1901 James married Maggie on 30th Dec at St Augustus Church in the Roman Catholic Tradition, James , aged 28 a Coal Miner, Maggie aged 21 Domestic Servant.. ^[4]

Thomas died in Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1934 of Stomach Cancer, his death was registered by his son Thomas. ^[5]
