Biography

He is the son of John Bradley and Diane Unknown. [1]

Thomas was born in Virginia in 1735, probably in Caroline County. He moved with his family from Virginia about 1738, first to Bute County, then later to Old Tryon County, where he lived until after his father passed away. He along with his father, and four of his brothers served in the Revolutionary War. Sometime after 1780, he moved his family to the Augusta, Georgia area, where lived out the remainder of his days. He died sometime after 1800, but before 1810.

Thomas first appears in the records of Bute County, North Carolina in 1765, when he paid taxes. He appears again in the records of Bute County, North Carolina in 1770 when he served on a Jury. The Bute County records for 1771 reflect that he took responsibility for a six year old child, tabatha McGee to raise until she reached the age of eighteen, to ensure that she learned to read and write and all the requirements for being a homemaker.

On February 12, 1772, Thomas was summoned to court for a civil matter, and then is mentioned in another court hearing later that same year on May 14th. Thomas served in the North Carolina Militia from Bute County, during the Revolutionary War. Thomas, as well as his father, and four brothers served.

Thomas relocated to Rutherford County after the revolutionary war, and resided there until about 1790. The Rutherford County Public Road Records list him as a Road Overseer for 1789. Thomas was replaced as overseer of the road by his brother Richard, in 1791, as he had moved to Augusta, Georgia. He is listed there on the 1800 Census. He was not found in the 1810 Census, indicating that he had died sometime between 1800 and 1810.

Source For Rutherford County Road Overseer in 1789

1789 Rutherford County Road Records -July 1789- "The court appointed Thomas Bradley overseer of the public road from Alexander McDonalds folly to the old muster ground and that all the hands be liable by law the dividing ridge between Cedar Creek and Turkey down to the said road are ordered to work on the same." In April of 1788, the court had ordered a group of twelve men in addition to Thos. Bradley to lay off a road from McDonald's lower field on Cove Creek from thence to Jones Williams and from thence up Young's Creek to the old Muster Ground making the road towards Moses Wrights..." Geo. Ledbetter was responsible for their qualifying as to the charges that would be made for marking and laying off the road. I assume this is the same road mentioned above. In October 1791 Richard Bradley was appointed overseer in place of Thomas Bradley who had moved away. This is all I have on the muster ground, but seeing the above information in the August Bulletin of the Old Tryon Genealogical Society made me curious.
