Biography

Thomas Breland would have perhaps been the male under age 10 enumerated in the household of Abraham Breland on the 1820 Pike County, Mississippi Census.[1] His mother would be Elizabeth Breland, the second wife of Abraham Breland. [Elizabeth's birth surname has not been documented. Some descendants claim it was Odom without any documentation. She was perhaps the Widow Elizabeth Wilson documented on the 1800 St. Peters Parish, Beaufort District, South Carolina Census.]

Abraham and Elizabeth were among the recorded members of the New Zion Baptist Church in Pike County, Mississippi. At a meeting held May 1829 for New Zion Baptist Church in Pike County, Mississippi, one "Thomas Breland came forward. Not giving satisfaction, he was not received."[2]

According to a direct-descendant of son, David A. Breland, Thomas married Lizzie McKinzie. The descendant also stated she was the sister of Nathan McKinzie, and daughter of David McKinzie. David McKinzie's household was enumerated two doors from Abraham Breland on the 1820 Census cited above.

"Thomas Breland" first appeared on the Pike County, Mississippi tax rolls in 1843, and was charged for 1 poll.[3] The 1846 tax rolls listed his name as Thomas I. Breland.[4]

By 1850, Lucretia McKenzy was enumerated in the household of Nathan McKensy as age 27 with two children:

  • David A. Breland, age 5, born in Mississippi in the household of Nathan McKenzy
  • Lucretia A. Breland, age 2, born in Louisiana in the household of Nathan McKenzy[5]

The other two children were recorded on the 1850 Pike County, Mississippi Census in two other "McKenzy" households:

  • Martha Jane Breland, age 12, born in Mississippi in the household of Azearl McKenzy
  • Nancy R. Breland, age 9, born in Mississippi in the household of Ara McKenzy[6]

This suggests that Thomas I Breland died before 1850, and his wife, Lucretia, died after 1850. Given the fact his daughter, Lucretia, was born in December of 1848, Thomas would have died between the period of April 1848 to September 1850 when the Census was taken.

Children

Children of Thomas I. Breland born to Lucretia McKinzie were:

  1. Martha Jane Breland (born c1838 - died )
  2. Nancy R. Breland (born c1841 - died )
  3. David A. Breland (born 1847 - died 1917)
  4. Lucretia A. Breland (born c1848 - died )

Research Notes

There is speculation among Breland researchers as to who was the father of Thomas I. Breland. Some descendants claim he was the son of James M. Breland based on a newspaper article in the Tylertown Times (Kin of James M. Breland) asking "was James M. Breland's eldest son named Thomas". Research on that James M. Breland confirms that there was no Thomas Breland recorded among his heirs or the documents of Amite County, Mississippi.
