Biography

Mary Brierly (sometimes spelled as Briarly) was born at Tullamore, Kings County, Ireland in 1843. She was the second of 11 children of John Brierly or Briarly and his wife Elizabeth ("Liz") Plunkett Brierly or Briarly. To date we have been unable to identify any definitive birth or baptismal records for this woman; however, we are fairly well convinced that she was baptized as a Roman Catholic since that was true for all the other female children of her parents. (All the male children were baptized as Church of Ireland.)

Mary married Edward Roberts, a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary, at the Registry office in Tullamore on June 20, 1871. As indicated elsewhere, we feel comfortable that the reason they married at the Registry office was that Mary was a Roman Catholic and Edward was Church of Ireland.

We know that in 1874 and 1876 Mary was living in Gowran, Co. Kilkenny when she gave birth to her first two children; that by 1879 to at least 1886 she was living in The Rower, Co. Kilkenny, where she had her other four children; and that from 1901 to 1913 she was living in Inistioge, Co. Kilkenny.

Mary died (of "cardiac dropsy") at Inistioge on December 22, 1913, and the death was registered at Thomastown on December 29, 1913. We believe she was buried at The Rower, with the two of her children who died in their infancies, but we have no absolute evidence for those burials. However, she is certainly memorialized there, on a plaque on the wall, just inside the gate to the Church of Ireland churchyard. Her husband and a third son were buried there after her.

This Mary Brierly Roberts was my Irish grandfather's mother. I have asked the profile manager if shw would be willing to let me co-manage this profile. Again, I have a good deal of information about Mary and her parents, and her many siblings.
