Biography

Joseph Percy Brierly was born in Huddersfield in 1855 to Joseph Brierly and Mary Swallow [1] His family must have been reasonably well off, as in the 1861 census he is living in New House Place, Huddersfield with his parents Joseph (a merchant) and Mary; his 6 older siblings, an aunt and at least 2 live in staff. [2] His aunt Hannah Ellen, enumerated as a sister of Joseph Brierly senior, is described as "quite a lady"!

In 1871, Joseph Percy, a scholar, was still living at home with his father, brothers John and Sydney, his sister Elizabeth and one servant. [3]

After his marriage to Edith Middlemost in the first quarter of 1881, [4] they set up house together in Bankfield road, Huddersfield. [5] Joseph was described in this census as a designer of woollens.

By 1891, his growing family, which now included children Edith, Percy and George had moved to Westbourne Road, Huddersfield. Joseph's business as a manufacturer of woollens must have been doing well as his household also included 2 domestic servants, a cook and a nurse. [6]

The new century saw yet another move for Joseph's family and the 1901 census records their residence as Wentworth Street, Huddersfield. Edith and George are still living at home with their parents, but there is no mention of Percy.[7] As Percy was 16 at this time, it is possible that he was away at school or perhaps travelling as part of the family business.

In 1911, Joseph, his wife Edith and two of their sons are living in the parish of Lindley Cum Quarmby. [8] Lindley was a district dominated by textile mills so it is a possibility that some of these may have been associated with the family textiles business.

Joseph's death was registered in the Knaresborough district in the 1st quarter of 1936. [9] He was 80 years old.
