On 8 Oct 1894 he and cooper Adam Schuman were standing on a platform above a large wooden cask used for distilling. The head of the cask blew off under the force of steam that had been injected into it. The explosion drenched the two mean with hot water and steam and threw Albert up to the ceiling and then onto the platform and the ground below. Albert was badly scalded over most of his body. He died later that day of his injuries. Adam's burns were less severe.[5][9]
