Biography

1776 Project
Private Zadock Briggs served with Hampshire County, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Zadock Briggs is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A014420.

Zadock's origin is still in question. See the DNA section below.

The DAR reports birth about 1757 in Cranston, Providence, Rhode Island. This information appears to be based on the assumption that he was the son of William Briggs and Sarah (Roberts) Briggs. No documents have been found giving the parents of Zadock. These parents have been removed and should not be added without documentation.

Zadock served in the American Revolution. He enlisted in 1775 at age 16. He was a private in Captain Oliver Lyman's company and was at the Battle of Saratoga, 1777; and a member of Washington's Life Guard, marched to the relief of Fort Stansix and was at the battle of Stone Arabia, where his Colonel, John Brown, was killed.[1][2]

It is sometimes said that Zadock married twice. In fact, this profile has Sally Snow and Harriet Sally Seymour attached. DAR has Harriet Seymour and Window Parmetier. This information appears to come from an interview with Lucy Foxwell in her 90s, which may be less than fully reliable. See DNA section below.

There is a death certificate in Vermont for daughter Sally, which gives her mother as Sally. There are only two children older than Sally (Polly and Asenath), so only they could have been from a different mother. Note that Sally was mentioned in Zadock's will as his wife.

In 1790, Zadock resided in Leyden, Hampshire, Massachusetts.[3]

He died on 16 Sep 1823 in Union Township, Washington, Ohio.

Residence

  • 1790 - Leyden, Hampshire, Massachusetts.[4]
  • 1800 - Barnardston, Hampshire, Massachusetts.[5]

DNA

  • DNA analysis is ongoing but appears to show that Zadock was not descended from the same line as William Briggs, whose American line originated in the Taunton / Rhode Island area.
  • DNA analysis is said to show that all the children were from the same woman.

Following up on the comment below, recent DNA evidence suggests that Zadock was not a descendant of the Taunton Briggs, but of Clement Briggs of Plymouth/Weymouth.
