Richard was born about 1524, estimated from marriage, the eldest son of Richard Brighouse of Hipperholme.
He married Isabell Brodley on 24 May 1546 at Halifax.[1] Their first child Martin was baptised on 13 April 1547.[2]
Richard is named first in the list of sons in his father's will 12 September 1555, but had probably already been provided for as he did not receive specific lands other than remainders if the other sons died.[3] He appeared to own or lease copyhold land jointly with his father by 1550, as they appeared together in that year at Wakefield Manor Court: "And furthermore [they said] that Richard Brighous and Richard his son gave and by their indenture demised at farm to Richard Bentley 7 acres of land with the buildings thereon in the graveship of Hyperome, which land and tenements of the lord according to the copy of the rolls of the court are now in the tenure of John Colleer and Margaret Haldesworth".[4]
