Biography

Volga German
Emilie Brill was a Volga German.
Emilie Brill has German Roots.

Emilie was born in 1866 in Norka, Russia, the daughter of Heinrich Jakob Brill and Anna Catharina Alt. Both the Brill and Alt families were among the original settlers of Norka.

There were no Brills listed in the Kulberg Reports, but there are three Bruells that appear to be a match for the three Brill families in the 1767 Norka census. It appears that a Heinrich Brill was the father and Johann and Heinrich the younger Brill were probably older sons or much younger brothers, already married and living in separate households since immigrating to Russia.

The original Heinrich Bruell, born in 1713, was Johann Heinrich Bruell,a Reformed Lutheran stonemason from Isenburg traveled too Russia with his wife Barbara Helena, and five children: [1]

  • Johann Heinrich, born 1751
  • Jacob, born 1753
  • Johann Conrad, born 1755
  • Catharina, born 1759
  • Elisabeth, born 1761

The family arrived in Russia on 09 August 1766 on the Pink Slon under the command of Lt. Sergey Panov. They remained in the St. Petersburg area through the end of the following Spring, before their smaller group set off for the Volga River region of Russia. [2]

One year later, in the 1767 Norka census, the name of his wife changed from Barbara Helena to Barbara Elisabeth, born 1719, and the couple only had three children: [3] From this record, it appears that children Johann Conrad and Catharina did not survive the journey across Russia. It also looks as if his first wife, Elisabeth Helena, also passed away and he remarried a woman named Barbara Elisabeth. [4]

Heinrich and Barbara Elisabeth Brill's children in 1767 were: [5]

  • Johann Heinrich, born 1749
  • Johann Jakob, born 1752
  • Elisabeth Katharina, born 1762

The second Brill family was headed by Johannes Brill, born in 1731, probably in the Isenburg area of what is now Germany. [6] He appears in the 1767 Norka census in family #77 as 36-year-old Johannes Brill and his wife Eva Elisabeth, age 24. [7] Johannes and his wife Elisabeth had no children in 1767, and three children in 1775: [8]

  • Melchior, born 1768
  • Anna Margaretha, born 1771
  • Anna Katharina, born 1775

The third Brill possible was the second one named Heinrich Brill, born 1737 in Isenburg. He was 25 years younger than the elder Heinrich Brill. The younger Heinrich is listed in the first Norka census, family #76, next to Johannes Brill and his family, family #77. [9] It is very likely that these two Brills were brothers. As with the first two men described above, Heinrich the younger Brill traveled on the same ship at the same time. [10]

In the 1767 census the younger Heinrich had a wife, Anna Elisabeth, born 1739, and a son, Johannes, born in 1763 in Isenburg. [11] By 1775, he and his wife had three sons: [12]

  • Johannes, born 1763
  • Johann Kaspar, born 1768
  • Johann Heinrich, born 1772

Each of these men had at least one son who was living at the time of the 1811 census, and any of them could have gone on to become the grandfather of the Brills born in the 1860s.

Research continues; I will update this record as soon as possible.
