Biography

William M. Brill was born in Virginia about 1838 to Michael Brill and Eleanor McKeever.[1] Before June 1860, William married Ellenor Cooper Engle, daughter of John Engle and Sarah Cooper, and they were living with Charles Cooper.[2] In 1862, he enlisted in the Confederate Army—Company G, 114th Regiment (Infantry), Virginia Militia.[3][4] On 28 Aug 1862, he was wounded in military engagement near Manassas.[5]

William and Ellenor had six children:[6][7]

  3. John William Brill (1865-1935)[12]; m. 1891, Rachel Annetta Coy[13]

  5. Harrison M. Brill (1873- ); m. 1897, Pearl M. Barton[16]
  6. Willie Bell Brill (1874- )

By 1870 the family was living in West Virginia, where children Emma, Harrison and Willie were born. It is possible that son John William was born in West Virginia as well (1870, 1900 & 1930 Censuses give birthplace as Virginia, 1880, 1910 & 1920 as West Virginia). William died in Hampshire, West Virginia on 13 Dec 1876, he was 38 years old.[17] His widow married as her second husband, 72-year-old Robert Edwards, on 19 Aug 1879; Ellen was 39.[18][7][19]

Research Notes

Harrison Brill: after the 1870 census, records refer to a Gilbert M. Brill or Michael H. G. Brill listing William M. Brill and Ellender C. Engle as parents. I'm assuming this is Harrison as the birth date and parents are correct.
