Merwyn Glen Brinson was born on June 25, 1922, in Barton County Kansas, near the town of Susank. He was the third child of Charles W. and Margaret Jane Miller Brinson. He grew up on farms near Waynoka, Okla., and Westville, Okla., with shorter times spent near Lyons, Kan., and Rogers, Ark.
After graduating from Westville (Okla.) High School, he attended Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater before entering the Army Infantry. After his hears in the service, he returned to his education, graduating from Oklahoma A&M in 1947. While taking graduate courses he got the opportunity to go to work for Conoco in Ponca City, where he met his future wife Colleen Good whom he married on Christmas day 1950.
Glen and Collen raised three children in Ponca City. He was a charter member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where, over the years, he served at one time or another in nearly every capacity that did not require ordination or singing. He was active in scouting, helped organize and lead Troop 56, led the group attending the National Jamboree in 1977, and was a recipient of scouting’s prestigious Silver Beaver award.
Glen retired from Conoco in 1985 after nearly 36 years of service. For many of those years he also served on the Board of Directors of the Conoco Employees Credit Union.
Glen passed away on Feb. 9, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers, Melvin George and Earl Clifford. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Colleen; his daughter Laura Southard (and husband Mark of Ponca City), their children, Katie and husband, Ryan Paul of Raleigh, N.C., Bill and wife, Myla Southard of Edmond, Carol Southard of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Ben Southard of Ponca City; his son Dick Brinson and wife, Beverly, of The Woodlands, Texas, their children, Brandon Brinson of Houston, Texas and Austin Brinson of Cambridge, Mass.; his son, Don Brinson and wife, Ann, of Oklahoma City, and their daughter Christina, of Oklahoma City; and nieces and nephews.
Trout Funeral Home and Crematorium will be in charge of the private family burial service and a Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church at 1904 Pecan Road on Monday, Feb. 13, at 10 a.m. A memorial fund has been established at St. Paul’s. Please designate “Audio/Visual Fund” or “Boy Scout Troop”.
