Catherine (Bristol) Pickering was born November 30, 1826, in Pike Co., OH, a daughter of Benjamin G. and Mary Bristol. In 1830, she came, with her parents, to Henry Co., IN, where her father entered a tract of uncultivated land, located one mile west of Middletown, Henry Co., IN. The Bristol family was among one of the first settlers in Fall Creek Twp., Henry Co., IN. Benjamin died on January 3, 1869 and Mary on December 19, 1878. Catherine married Jordan Pickering on June 28, 1846, and was left a widow on January 2, 1868. They had a family of three children: Loring A. (Nora Cummins), who lived in Sumner Co., KS; Mary Alice; and Charles J., who taught in the district school in 1883. Catherine, and her parents, were members of the Methodist Church. Jordan belonged to the Friends Church.

Catherine continued to live, in the brick residence built by her father in 1846, on a farm of 96 acres after her parent's and husband's deaths.
