William was born in 1848. He was the son of John Britten and Julia Wardell. He passed away in 1916.
Drummer and Bugler for the Union in the Civil War
William was a trunk maker and resided at 119 Jefferson St., Newark, NJ.
At the age of 15 1/2 on June 23, 1864, he enlisted into the army as a private in Company G, 37th Regiment in the New Jersey Volunteer Infantry for 100 days from Newark, NJ. William served as a drummer. He was discharged at Trenton, NJ on 1 Oct 1864. This was Captain William J Roberts' Company. He also served in the 4th Battery Light Artillery from August 1864 to 17 Jun 1865 as a bugler. This was Captain Charles R Doane's Company and was finally discharged in Richmond, Virginia.
William returned to Newark to live and work. Five years later he married Alice, who died a year later. He stayed in Newark until 1872, then moved to Providence, Rhode Island. He resided in Providence until1912, when he moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut. He stayed there at 163 Harriet Street until his death in 1916.
When William applied for his war pension on 24 Oct 1910, he listed his occupation as a melter-refiner. William is buried at Mt Pleasant Cemetery, Newark, NJ.
