Obituary

"Newport Hoosier State Wednesday, March 6, 1901

John Brock died at Hillsdale Monday, February 25, 1901, at 12 o'clock noon, aged about 76 years. All or nearly all of his life had been spent in this county. In 1845 he married Rebecca Hopkins and to them were born 8 daughters and 3 sons. Six daughters and 2 sons are living. The wife Rebecca died 12 years ago.

Mr. Brock died after an illness of a few weeks. He was at one time a member of the United Brethren Church. He seemed prepared to die, and to meet his God. He was poor, but honest. In his peculiar characteristics, he was "steadfast", never found a fault with a neighbor, always paid his taxes, debts and dues because he believed it was the right thing to do. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. Israel Lake, assisted by Rev. Beebe. He was buried at Highland."[16]

Notes

To be quite honest, the more I look at this profile and my research, the more confused I get. My research from 1870 is solid, I believe, although I am beginning to doubt myself on that as well. I am not sure where John A. Brock was before arriving in Indiana, although the birthplaces of his children would seem to indicate that he was in Kentucky before 1864 (His daughter Vina's birth--Indiana). I found his daughter Eliza Elizabeth in the Laurel County, Kentucky birth records 10 Apr 1861. So Laurel County, Kentucky, right? His next oldest two sons are possibly found in Laurel County birth records as well, if one concedes that John Jr.'s middle name is Isham, and Henry's first name is James. (The latter is more probable, as the birth record is for "James H.")

So with potentially three children in Laurel County, Kentucky birth records, all born to John A. Brock and Rebecca (an illegibly transcribed Robison once) Hopkins, one would believe that John and Rebecca would be found somewhere in the vicinity of Laurel County, Kentucky census records. And one would be right...sort of.

There are a John and Rebecca Brock living in Harlan and then Clay Counties (Clay was adjacent to Harlan and Laurel at the time) in 1850 and 1860, respectively. The problems are twofold: their ages and their children. The 1850 census lists John age 41, Rebecca age 36, parents Jesse 67 and Sarah 57, and then below them, and in this order, James 14, Louisa 12, Sarah 10, Jesse 7, Barbara 5, John 6 mos., and Barbara 18.

In the 1860 Clay County, Kentucky census, John is listed as age 52, wife Rebecca 45, and then the following children: Barbary 14, John 10, Polly 7, and Washington 3.

The July 1863 Civil War registration for John A Brock lists him as living in Parke County, Indiana, having been born in Tennessee, and being 37 years old.

In the 1870 Vermillion County, Indiana census, John is 50 and Rebecca 45. Next are listed as follows: George 22, Jane 21, John 17, Henry 14, Eliza 10, Vina 6, Mary A 3, and Pheby 1.

It is also interesting to note that John's 1880 census record states he is 55, and his wife Rebecca 53.

The 1870, 1880, and 1900 census records in this profile are of the same person/family. That much I am sure of. It also seems that the 1850 and the 1860 census records are of the same person/family. What I am unsure of is whether the records are ALL of the same person.

Anyone with any other documentation? Thoughts? I am letting this go for a bit before I go nuts. I will come back to it after it's had a chance to simmer. Please forgive my unusual note. Thank you.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
