1860 census-Valentine had land holdings of $1300, and an estate worth $10,000. All of his kids were in school, and he and Bethany could read and write. He was listed as a farmer.
1880 census-Valentine was living in Louisiana with Bethany. The state line had been resurveyed and the Brock home straddled the new state line between Mississippi and Louisiana. In a statement recorded in the Washington Parish seat at Franklinton, Valentine is on record saying, "When I start to die move me to the Mississippi side of the house because I don't want to die in Louisiana!" He was listed as a farmer. Bethany had learned to read. They are living close to their sons Jeptha and James, both local doctors.

This Valentine Brock is one of many Valentine Brock that originated in Switzerland. The original immigrant, Johan Valentine Brock was born in Oberhochstadt (now called Hochstadt) Pfaltz, Germany. He boarded the Queen of Denmark in Rotterdam in 1751. Then the Queen of Denmark made a pitstop in Cowes, Isle of Wright, U.K. before sailing for the Colonies. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Brock-816
I am an African American. In my research of my maternal line, my grandfather told me that my great grandfather George Brock was born In Franklinton La, and his father was white. I am interested in finding out if anyone in this family was his father or has any stories floated through the Brock line of my great grandfather. Specifically, I wanted to know if Valentine Brock was a slave owner. My grandfather was born around 1856. Any information would be appreciated.. Jacqueline Watson
The Brock's lived on the Ms-La State lines adjacent to the Bouga Chitto River just a few miles north of Franklinton. Evidently, this Valentine was a slaveholder when you consider his loss of wealth in the 1860-1870 census. I would assume this was due to his loss of "human property". (see census above) I have two gg grandmothers, Angeline and Martha Jane, that are sisters of this Valentine. So maybe my DNA could be of use. Me? I don't know much about DNA- Happy Hunting! Allan
