He was baptized on May 31, 1857, in Ulverston, at St Mary.^[2] He was enumerated in the 1861 ^[3] and 1871 census ^[4] residing with his family in Ulverston. In 1871, he stated he was thirteen, and a "Joiner Apprentice".
