I believe that Eliza and Richard immigrated from Germany separately with their families, and then met and married in the United States. Eliza is recorded on passenger lists with her mother and siblings in 1891. Their wedding photo was taken in Connecticut, and while I can't find a marriage record, her dress shows an 1890s style. She and Richard are living together with their daughter in the 1900 census.
Eliza's biological father was her mother's employer at the time, and Eliza was ashamed of being "illegitimate."
