Biography

Cornelius Wood Bromfield was born on 29 Jan 1712. He was the son of Thomas Bromfield and Philadelphia Mills. He was baptised[1] on 1 Mar 1712 at St Giles Cripplegate.

Thomas Bromfield the father of Cornelius Wood Bromfield gave written evidence[2] in Nov 1721 that he was legally married to Philadelphia Mills which she had denied. He said that their marriage was according to the rites of the Church of England within the liberty of the Fleet Prison. The marriage had the consent of Philadelphia's mother Deborah Mills and was on the fourth of December in 1711. They lived together for about two years after the marriage. They had a son Cornelius who was born in the house of Robert Leigh in the parish of Cripplegate Without in the county of Middlesex. The child was baptised soon after and Edward Salter the husband of Deborah at the time was god father. Thomas said that when Cornelius was about 6 months old Philadelphia eloped and they have had no communication with her since that time.
