Biography

Birth and Parentage

John Bromley was born in 1360 (aged 28 in 5 Henry 5 [1417/8]).[1]

John was the son of Richard de Bromley and his first wife, Agnes, the daughter of William Praers, chamberlain of Cheshire, descended from the Praers of Barthemley[2] and his wife, Letice, the daughter and coheir of William de Wetenhale.[1]

John Bromley was son of William Bromley and his wife Annabella. [3]

John's father died in 10 Henry IV [30 September 1408-29 September 1409], having, after the death of Agnes, married Cicely the widow of Richard del Mere and sole daughter and heir of Richard le Grosvenour of Budworth, who survived him to then marry John de Bradburn, her Inquisition post mortem was held in 11 Henry IV.[2]

An Inquisition post mortem in 23 Richard II [22 June 1399-29 September 1399], found that John was the heir of his father, Richard.[2]

Marriage

He married Margery, Daughter of Sir Thomas Massey, of Totton, Knt, by whom he had Issue [3]

John married Margery, the daughter of Alice and John le Mascy of Tatton, knt.[2]

His wife Margery had committed adultery with Thomas de Wetenhale, with whom, sometime after John went to France in the King's retinue in 5 Henry V, she eloped and lived with at Wich Malbank during the remainder of John's life.[2]

Death

An Inquisition post mortem held in 7 Henry V [21 March 1419-20 March 1420], found that John de Bromley, chivr, died on the Monday next before the Feast of the Nativity of S Mary the Virgin in 7 Henry V and held in desmesne as of fee the manors of Badinton, Bromhall, and Cholmundeston, half the manor of Alvaston, and lands in Alstanston, Nantwich among others.[2]

Issue

John had children:

  1. Thomas, died in the lifetime of his father without having surviving children;[2] #Thomas. The said Thomas, eldest Son, died without lawful Issue but left a natural Son, Thomas Bromley, from whom the Bromleys of Darford in Cheshire, and others of the Name, are descended; [3]
  2. William, heir to his brother Thomas, aged 13 at his father's death in 7 Henry V, died 9 Henry VI [1 September 1430-31 August 1431],[2] married Margery or Margaret, the daughter of Randle Maynwarying of Baddiley;[4] William, who left three Daughters as Coheirs. [3]
  3. Richard;[2]

  5. Agnes, who was married to Richard Cholmondeley of co Derby;[4]
  6. Margery who was married to William Hassall of Nantwich;[4]
