In 1910, at 26 years old, Joseph was living with his parents and siblings in Wolcott Township, New Haven County, Connecticut, working as a farm hand[6]. Seven years later, he was required to register as a resource of the state for the 1917 Connecticut Military Census[7]. When he registered, he noted that he had a serious physical disability, known as "scrofula bone, curvature spine"[7].
By 1920, when he was 36 years old, Joseph was still living in Wolcott, with his mother and two of his siblings[8]. At that time, he was working as a carpenter for farmers in the area[6]. A few years later, in 1924, Joseph was required to register again with the state for the military census[9].
Marriage & Family Life
On April 29th, 1930, Joseph May Bronson married Irene May Redfern in Putnam, Washington County, New York[10]. Ten years later, the couple was still living in Wolcott, Connecticut with six children[11]. At that time he was working as a carpenter and was also serving as the town assessor[11]. A couple years later in Wolcott, Joseph was required to register for the World War II Military Draft[12]. By then, he was working for Waterbury Brass Goods nearby in Waterbury, Connecticut[12].
Death & Burial
Joseph May Bronson passed away on March 21st, 1957 in Wolcott, New Haven County, Connecticut[4][13]. He was buried nearby at Edgewood Cemetery[4].
Research Notes
Information about Joseph's children has been omitted for privacy. Many are still living.
In the 1917 Connecticut military census, Joseph stated that he had a serious physical disability (scrofula bone, curvature spine). I believe these may be two seperate diagnosis. "Scrofula bone" seems to point to Tuberculosis that moved to the spine. "Curvature spine" could be a seperate form of Scoliosis, or a concurring issue due to the tuberculosis.[7]. The WWII Draft does not indicate any physical impairments.
