Biography
The daughter of Willis Bronson Jr and his first wife, Elizabeth Ann (Bailey) Bronson, Nellie Bronson was born in Amboy Township, Illinois[citation needed] in 1866, residing there with her family.[1][2]
Nellie married John Stephen Stein (1860-1892), the son of George Stein and Elizaeth Bressler, having three known children together:
- Eva Pearl Stein (1886-1976)
- George Willis Stein (1890-1968)
- John Stephen Stein, Jr. (1892-1971)
Widowed in 1892, Nellie remarried, marrying Sylvester Peddicord (1848-), in Dallas County, Iowa on December 12, 1894[3] and having one daughter together, Edna Mae Peddicord (1896-1984). They made their home together in Washington Township, Iowa, farming.[4]
Her second marriage ended in divorce and by 1910, Nellie had taken back her first married name and lived with her children in Perry Township, Iowa. That year, her son, George, worked as a dray driver and her son, John, at the age of 17, worked at a butcher shop, working as a meat cutter.[5] On the 1920 federal census, Nellie was enumerated in the Perry Township, Iowa home of her daughter, Edna Green, and her family.[6] On the 1925 Iowa state census, Nellie was enumerated in the Minburn, Iowa home of her daughter, Eva Knee, and her family.[7]
In 1940, Nellie lived alone in Perry Township, Iowa.[8] On her mother's death, Nellie had begun to receive her father's Civil War pension benefits, for which her mother had applied, only to have the pension contested by Nellie's stepmother, Dora.[9] Buy 1950, Nellie shared a home with widow Blanche Pardeen.[10]
Nellie Stein passed away at the age of 95 and is buried at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry, Iowa.[11][12]
