John was born in June 1857 in Maidstone, Kent, England. He was the son of John Brooker and Jane Burren.[1] [2] [3] [4]

When John was 20 he married Honora Colleran on 23 October 1877 in Oamaru, North Otago, New Zealand. The couple had one child: Robert James Brooker.[6] [7]
