Biography
On 12 Sep 1844 at Trinity Church, North Meols, John Ball, full age, bachelor, labourer, Birkdale, son of John Ball, farmer, married Ellen Brooks, full age, spinster, Southport, daughter of George Brooks, labourer.[1]
Ellen's surname was spelled either Brooks or Brookes in the birth registrations of her children with John Ball.
Ellen's birthplace was consistently given as Cheshire in about 1820. In 1851, the location was "Burton" with no county listed.[2] In 1861 and 1871, the birth location was Cheshire.[3][4] In 1881, Ellen's birth location was said to be Seacombe, Cheshire, although the record is highly distorted and has been written over to be almost illegible.[5]
Ellen Ball, aged 64, was buried 30 Dec 1885 at Kirkdale Cemetery.[6] The residence was 4c 10h Portland Place, Everton. This appears to be the same address that Ellen's daughter Mary Ellen (Ball) Kirby (1852-1934) was living at in 1891.
Research Notes
As noted above, Ellen's place of birth was inconsistently reported on the census, although it was always Cheshire in about 1820. Ellen's marriage certificate gives her father's name as George Brooks. There was an Ellin Brookes, daughter of George and Elizabeth Brookes, baptized in Burton, Cheshire on 19 Sep 1819.[7] This may be Ellen's birth record, but more research on the Brooks/Brookes family is likely needed.
