According to Samuel Brooking's gravestone, he was born on the 6th of October, 1801;[1]however, none of the census records (see below) give 1801 as the recorded birth year. His 1850, 1870, and 1880 censuses record his birth year as 1802, but the 1860 census records his birth year as 1803. His immigration record (see below) even records his birth year as 1804.
Based on his marriage and immigration records (see below), Samuel Brooking was born and raised in Cornwall England. Seeing that his marriage took place in Linkinhorne, he was likely born there, or atleast around the area.
After researching the Cornwall Parish Register[2], there were no Samuel Brookings who were baptised in the year of 1801; however, after extending the search year criteria to 1790-1810, it was found that their were two Samuel Brookings baptised within this time frame. The first was actually Samuel Brookin who was baptised in Quethiock, Cornwall (which is 6 miles South of Linkinhorne) in 1802[3], and the other was a Samuel Brooking who was baptised in St. Tudy (which is 27 miles West of Linkinhorne) in 1806.[4] The Quethiock Samuel is the more likely candidate because it aligns more closely with the birth years shown on the census records. Also, the baptism was recorded on 24 Oct, which fits in with the birth day and month on the gravestone. He would have been born on 06 Oct, but baptised on 24 Oct. Based on this evidence, it is highly probable that Samuel Brooking's gravestone birthdate was off by one year, but the birthday and month are correct.
Marriage and Children
He married Jane Truebody on 25 May 1828 in Linkinhorne, Corwall, England[5].
Samuel, his wife, and their oldest daughter immigrated to the US from England in 1832. They arrived on 13 Jun 1832 in New York on the ship Big Crystal[6]. According to census records (see below), after they immigrated from England, they immediately moved to Wayne County, Pennsylvania.
Death
According to his gravestone, he died on 20 August 1886, and he was buried in the Brooking Cemetery in Wayne County, PA.[1]
