Biography

Sarah Ann Brooking (aka Brookham, Brookam, Brooken, Brooker, Brookman) was born in 1859 in Gulval, Cornwall, England to Samuel Brooking and Margaret Jane (Rowe) Brooking. Her birth was registered in Penzance, Cornwall in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Rowe.^[1]

• Note: based on a different Sarah Brooking's entry on the 1881 census, her mother was thought to be named Cecilia. Cecilia (nee Hollow) was the wife of Henry Brooking, whereas this Sarah's marriage record clearly shows her father was named Samuel.

In 1861 Sara Ann Brookham (age 2) lived at Boskednen in Gulval with her father Samuel (45, Tin Miner) and mother Jane (26, Tin Miner).^[2]

In 1871 Sarah Ann Brooken (age 11) lived at Tredennick Moore in Gulval with her father Samuel (56, Labourer), mother Jane (36), and three siblings: Elizabeth Jane (9), Samuel James (7, Scholar), and John Henry (5).^[3]

Sarah's father passed away in 1873.

In 1881 Sarah Brookman (age 21, Domestic Servant) lived at 4 East Terrace in Penzance with her employer John Pearce (64, Grocer) and his three daughters: Elizabeth Pearce (36, Drapers Assistant), Annie Pearce (33, Housekeeper), and Amy Pearce (31, Grocers Assistant).^[4][5] Sarah's family lived in Gulval: widowed mother Jane (46, Charwoman) and two brothers: Samuel (17, Stone Quay Labourer (Mercht)) and John H (15, Grocers Errand Boy).^[6]

Sarah Ann Brooking (of full age, Spinster, residing at Gulval, daughter of Samuel Brooking (deceased), Miner) and Joseph Ladner (of full age, Bachelor, Labourer, residing at Back of Marine Terrace, James Ladner, Labourer) were married in 2 Feb 1884 at St Mary's in Penzance, Cornwall - the witnesses were L Collins & E Brooking.^[7][8]

Sarah and Joseph had six children:

2. Joseph James Ladner (1886-1886)
3. Joseph James Ladner (1887-1926)
4. Amy Mildred (Ladner) Toutcher (1889-1970)

In 1891 Sarah Ladner (age 31) lived at Churchtown in Paul, Cornwall with her husband Joseph (35, Farm Labourer) and three children: James (3), Amy (2), and Elizabeth (0).^[9] Daughter Harriet J (6, Scholar) was staying at High Sheffield in Paul with Sarah's brother Samuel Brookham (28, Stone Mason) and mother Margaret Brookham (55).

In 1901 Sarah Ladner (age 38) lived at Back Marine Terrace in Penzance with her husband Joseph (45, Tin Smelters Labourer) and four children: Harriet J M (16, Domestic Servant), Joseph J (13), Amy M (12), and Elizabeth R (2).^[10]

In 1911 Sarah Ann Ladner (age 47) lived in Penzance with her husband Joseph James (53, General Labourer), daughter [Harriet] Jane (28), granddaughter Ethel Ladner (2), grandson Walter Henry Ladner (0), and visitor John Stannard (22).^[11]

Sarah's husband passed away in 1916.

Sarah A Ladner married William P Wright in 1918. The marriage was registered in Penzance in the first quarter of the year.^[12]

In 1921 Sarah Ann Wright (age 58) lived in Penzance with her husband William Pentraux Wright (50, Fisherman), son-in-law Sydney M Hayward (35, Engine Driver for Defence Corps), daughter Harriet Jane Hayward (35), and six Hayward grandchildren: Ethel Winifred (12), Walter Henry (11), Sidney Ivor (8), Norman James (3), William Charles (2), and Violet Lovaine (9 months).^[13]

Sarah A Wright passed away in 1933, aged 74 years. Her death was registered in Penzance in the third quarter of the year.^[14]
