Stories

Recollection by Keith Bailey

My grandmother has told me a story about Peter (Long), Josie (Long), Lou (Long) and Mr. Brooks coming back from MO. I have no idea when this was and no clue how long they had been gone. Mr. Brooks had been shot and was unable to get around well. by Keith Bailey 2002 [8]

Research Notes

  • There are various rumors about his middle name, but none are proven. His middle initial "H." is documented.
  • It's possible David H. Brooks was married three times or potentially had other relationships.
  • There are two Frady boys in his home on the 1870 Census (Gilbert Winfield Frady and George Washington Frady). They are sons of Susannah Susan Frady and appear on the 1880 Census with her. Descendants of George Washington Frady appear to be atDNA ICW other descendants of David with his wife Louiza Long. They appear only on the Brooks side. Chromosome browser review and more tests are needed to confirm. See David H. Brooks notes for atDNA. Ancestry Profile
  • David H. Brooks and Elizabeth Tyler's marriage certificate is dated 29 Mar 1856. D. H. Brooks Jr.'s death certificate has his birth year as 1843, also names these two as parents. Why married in 1856 when Jr was born in 1843?

Disputed Origins

It's theorized that David H. Brooks was the son of Samuel Brooks of Hamilton County, Tennessee. And the grandson of William Brooks of North Carolina. However, atDNA appears to imply that David H. Brooks might have a closer connection through Buncombe County, NC Brooks. Such as John Brooks 1786–1827 of Pole Creek, Buncombe, North Carolina. 1827 Probate record for John Brooks dec'd names William Brooks and Elizabeth Brooks ADULT CHILDREN and heirs. MINOR CHILDREN; David, Susannah, John, Rachel, George, Hugh, Mary, and Charles Brooks are minors and reside with the widow. Samuel Brooks security. At least two descendants of David H Brooks, with his wife Louiza Long, have AncestryDNA tests that show an ICW pattern that suggests a closer connection to other children of John Brooks of Buncombe County, NC. Chromosome browser review and more tests are needed to confirm. Ancestry Profile or contact Raffety-49
