Howard Gilbert BROPHY was born on 27 September 1911 in Dorset, Bennington County, Vermont.[1] He is the son of Gilbert Brophy and Edith Bebee.
Howard first married Gladys E FISHER on 12 July 1931 in Manchester, Vermont, United States.[2][3] Their daughter, Joan Marie Brophy, was born three years later. In January of 1937, Gary Howard Brophy joined the family, and in 1939, Harvey B. Brophy arrived.[4]
In 1940, the household consisted of Howard, Gladys, their three children, 19-year-old Dorothy Greene, the family's housekeeper, and Fredrick Reynolds, a boarder. Howard is listed as a shopkeeper in Dorset at this time.[4] His obituary, printed in 1994, claims that he operated the General Grocery Store in East Dorset, and he and the family worked the farm where they resided.[5]
Howard also devoted much of his time to the town where he lived. From 1941 to 1992, he was Dorset's first Constable and the tax collector. Among his accomplishments were a deputy sheriff and a deputy with the Fish & Game Department.[5] Unfortunately, all was not blissful in the couple's marriage.
A divorce was granted to the couple in the county of Bennington, Vermont, on 12 January 1943. "Intolerable severity" was the grounds for the divorce brought by Gladys after a marriage of twelve years.[6] Gladys would later marry Frank W Eggleston on 22 September 1945, in Bellows Falls, Windham, Vermont.[7] The children remained with Howard. He retained Dorothy Greene as the housekeeper.
For a time, Howard and his children remained in Dorset. Howard still worked at the store there in town and served as the vice president and later the president of the Vermont State Grocers Association. He removed to Windsor, Vermont, for a short time and became a police officer in the town, returning to Dorset around 1950, where he worked fifteen years as the chief of police in nearby Manchester.[5]
Howard married Dorothy Evelyn Greene, the housekeeper, on 1 October 1950 in Rupert, Vermont.[8] They were married for over forty years.
Howard died in East Dorset, Vermont, on June 7, 1994,[5] and was buried in the East Dorset Cemetery in Dorset, Vermont.[9] His son, Gary, and his daughter, Joanne, were to predecease him.
