When Henry was 28 he married Lydia Jane Lane on 9 December 1839 in Wythe County, Virginia, USA.[2][3]
Henry is the founder of Brown-Wynne Funeral Homes,

the only business in Raleigh, North Carolina to survive the Civil War. He began by learning the furniture business under his father, then expanded into the manufacture of coffins,

opening the H. J. Brown Coffin House in 1836.

Eventually, the business became a funeral home and grew into one of the most respected businesses in Raleigh.
In 1846 he ran for City Commissioner representing the East Ward of Raleigh on the Reform Ticket.

Henry spent the remainder of his life in Raleigh

and became a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge.
[13] He was also a member of the Odd Fellows and a major contributor to the Methodist Church. In 2012 he was inducted into the Raleigh Hall of Fame as a Centennial member.

Henry died at the age of 66 on 12 May 1879 in Raleigh, Wake, North Carolina, USA.

and was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, Wake, North Carolina, USA.

Readers note: Two different obituaries state that he was born 11 Jul 1811, but his gravestone says 24 July 1811. I have found no birth records to resolve the conflict.
