Biography

1776 Project
Ship's Captain Nathan Brown served with Massachusetts Navy during the American Revolution.

I can find nothing definitive for him other than his headstone. According to Green[1] he was married to Sarah Somes, this in reference to his son Aaron, purportedly born in Wenham, who is buried in the same enclosure as Nathan.

  • 1777 Rosters of Soldiers and Sailors: Nathan Brown was commissioned as commander of the brigantine "Pluto" May 12, 1777. He was commissioned as commander of the brigantine "Montgomery" on February 5, 1778. Then became commander of the ship "Hunter". Return of armed vessels employed on expedition against Penobscot, Boston July 1779. Became Captain of the ship "Jack". "Descriptive list of officer and crew date July 1, 1780: Age 37 years, stature 5 feet 8 inches, complexion dark. Residence, Salem."[2]

There is a Capt Nathan Brown of Salem who shows up in Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolution (vol2, p666) a commander of several vessels, Salem is not far from Wenham, looking through Salem Vital Records, he doesn't show up there either.

Given that his wife is from Gloucester, a nautical captain begins to make sense. Following the trail of his wife back, there is mention of Nathan as "the son of William" and a link to "Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Genealogies : Transcribed from the Yarmouth Herald", which is not available online.

  • 1810 U.S. Census: Captain Nathan Brown lived in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts, with one male under age 10, one male age 10-15, one male 16-25, one male 45 and over (Nathan, approximate age 66), two females ages 16-26, and one female age 45 and over (wife, Sarah, approximate age, 60). [3]
  • 1820 U.S. Census: Nathan Brown lived in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts, with one male, age 10-15, one male over age 45 (Nathan, approximate age, 76), and one female age over 45 (wife, Sarah, approximate age, 70). One person worked in agriculture. Next neighbor was Nathan's son, Aaron. age between 26 and 45. Aaron would have been 32. [4]
