Joseph was born in 1913. He was the son of Joseph Brown and Rosa Askew.
He enlisted in the US Army 13 June 1941 at Fort McPherson in Atlanta. He was assigned to the 131st Field Artillery of the 2nd Battalion, eventually being promoted to Corporal. In March of 1942, his Battalion was sent to Java where they were captured by the Japanese. After being sent to Burma, the Battalion was forced to work on the infamous Death Railway connecting Burma with Siam. Joseph died of dysentery and tropical ulcers at 80 Kilo Camp near Moulmein, Burma 11 November 1943. His family at home in Newnan, GA received a card in December of that year stating that he was fine. The news that he had died did not reach his family until much later. His remains were returned to Newnan where they were buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.
