Rufus Brown was an Appalachian.
Native Virginian
Rufus Brown (also spelled Braun) was born on 1 December 1819 in Wythe County, Virginia. His parents were Michael Brown and Barbara Anne (Knipp) Brown.[1] Rufus was one of Michael Brown's 16 children, as named in his will.
Rufus married Margaret Ann Earhart in February 1842 in Wythe County, Virginia, United States.[2]
Rufus was named in the will of his father, Michael, dated 6 March 1843 and proven in court in Wythe County, Virginia, on 13 August 1849.[3] Rufus inherited his father's home plantation and dwelling house, subject to allowing his unmarried sister, Polly Brown, the use of the west room, if she desired. If she left his household while unmarried, Rufus was to pay her $500 from his father's estate. [Polly did not stay, but chose to go live with her younger sister, Sophia, and her husband, John Buchanan.] Michael Brown also desired that his enslaved people remain in the hands of his children only, and had them put up for sale amongst his children to go to the highest bidder. Rufus purchased three of Michael Brown's enslaved people: a man named Jim, a woman named Mary, and her unnamed/ungendered (probably very young) child.[4] [See Images 103 and 109 for appraisal and sales of slaves]
In the 1850 census, Rufus (age 30), Farmer, was enumerated in Wythe, Virginia, United States. Rufus owned real estate valued at $8,000.[5]
The 1850 slave schedule showed Rufus holding a solitary enslaved girl 14 years of age. None of the enslaved people he purchased from his father's estate seem likely to be represented on this schedule, so he may have resold them, manumitted them, or they may have all died.[6]
In the 1860 census, Rufus (age 40), Farmer, was enumerated in District 68, Wythe, Virginia, United States. Rufus owned real estate valued at $20,000 and had a personal estate valued at $1,500.[7]

In the 1870 census, Rufus (age 50), Farmer, was recorded as the head of household in Blacklick, Wythe, Virginia, United States. Rufus owned real estate valued at $20,000 and had a personal estate valued at $1,500.[8]
In the 1880 census, Rufus (age 60), Farmer, was recorded as the married head of household in Blacklick, Wythe, Virginia, United States.[9]
According to her Find-a-Grave memorial and the inscription on her gravestone, Rufus's wife, Margaret, died on 30 October 1880, and was laid to rest in the Saint Johns Lutheran Church Cemetery Sauers, Wytheville, Wythe County, Virginia, United States.[10]
Rufus (age 63, widowed), son of Michael Brown & Barbra Nipp, married second, Nannie E. [Nancy Emeline] Buchanan (age 40, single), daughter of John Buchanan and Elizabeth (Atkins) Buchanan, on 26 April 1883 in Wythe, Virginia, United States.[11]
Rufus's wife, Nannie E Brown, died of consumption on 31 December 1888 in Blacklick, Wythe, Virginia, United States.[12]
Rufus (age 70, widowed), married third, Margaret E. "Maggie" Calfee (age 40, single), the daughter of Robert A. Calfee and Amanda Jane (Howard) Calfee, on 13 August 1890 in Wythe, Virginia, United States.[13]
Rufus was mentioned on a memorial in Saint Johns Lutheran Church Cemetery Sauers, Wytheville, Wythe County, Virginia, United States with a death date of 27 November 1897.[14]
