Biography

Joseph Brown was born 2 Sep 1708 in Watertown, Massachusetts Bay, son of Joseph Brown and Ruhamah (Wellington) Brown.[1]

Joseph married (1) Katherine Mason. Katherine died at Holliston 7 Mar 1732/33.[2] Joseph and Katherine had one son, Joseph, born 23 Feb 1733 in Holliston.[3]

Joseph married (2) Hephzibah Lealand of Sherbourn on 11 Oct 1733 at Holliston, Massachusetts.[4] Joseph and Hephzibah had two daughters, both born in Holliston:[5] Lydia (born 29 Aug 1734) and Katherine (born 9 Apr 1737).

According to C. Pitch in View of Holliston in its First Century, Joseph Brown was elected deacon in Holliston in June 1748.[6]

Joseph and Hephzibah were living by themselves in Holliston at the time of the 1790 U.S. Census.[7]

Deacon Joseph Brown died 18 Oct 1791 in Holliston.[8] In his will, dated 13 Dec 1783,[9] Joseph (“I Joseph Brown of Holliston”) mentions “my well Beloved wife Hephzibah”, “my Son Joseph Brown”, “my Daughter Lydia Biglo” and “my Son in Law Samuel Messenger & Daughter Katherine his wife”. The will was presented for probate 24 Mar 1792 and approved 4 Apr 1792.

Research Notes

Hudson states in the History of the Town of Lexington that Joseph married Lydia Twitchel(l) after moving to Holliston.[10] It would appear, however, that Lydia Twitchel married Joseph's son, Joseph Brown Jr. In the 1913 edition this was corrected.[11]

Hi. Hepzibah Leland of Holliston married Jothom not Joseph Brown of Sudbury. Please look at the Holliston marriage record you site. Jothom Brown's name is also utilized in association with their children's birth. Jothom Brown

I looked again at the the Holliston marriage record sited. It states: “Joseph and Hephzibah Lealand of Sherbourn, Oct. 11, 1733.” (page 179 under BROWN). There may be some ambiguity as whether this is the Joseph Brown born in Watertown, son of Joseph and Ruhamah Brown, but in any case, Joseph Brown living in Holliston (not Sudbury!) did have a wife Hephzibah (or Hephzibeth) because they had two children, both born in Holliston according to Holliston birth records (page 29, under BROWN): “Lydia d. Joseph and Hephzibeth, Aug. 29, 1734.” and “Katherine d. Joseph and Hephzibah, Apr. 9, 1737.” It looks like Jotham/Jothom and his wife Hepzibah lived in Sudbury where most of their children were born.

Thanks for your help. Apologize for my confusion. It looks like the following is true:

1. Dea. Joseph Brown & Hepsibah (Leland) of Sherborn m. 11 Oct 1733, Sherborn.

2. Jotham Brown & Hepsibeth (Unknown) Brown of Sudbury who had their children in Sudbury and where the VR's named both parents. Marriage record not found.
