Charles was born in 1822. Although he was baptised as a bastard child of Mary Clack, a married woman, under the name of Brown he used the Clack surname throughout his life. He married Elizabeth Smith in 1845 under that surname. He passed away in 1885.

The baptismal record for Charles Clack recorded on the 18th Feb 1823, born 31 Dec 1822, is clearly marked "Charles Brown bastard child of Mary Clack, married woman.". Her husband, Henry Clack, had been sentenced to transportation to Australia in 1809 and this birth took place before she married a second time to Henry Smith. It is alleged that a Charles Brown was the guilty party. I have tried to present a copy of the record but the reproduction is not very good quality.
