Biography

Henry Marion Brown was born in Charleston, but at the age of 7 weeks, his mother passed away. Henry and his siblings moved to the cotton and indigo plantation owned by their Aunt Mary and her husband Jacob In Orangeburg, South Carolina. Other family members, including Mary and Jake's children, cousins from other aunts and uncles, an aunt, another unmarried uncle, and Jake's mother, all lived there together. Henry and his brother David joined the Edisto Rifles of the Confederate Army when he was 16 (having lied about his age). He served with General Leeat Gettysburg. After the war he married his cousin Rachel Pearson, daughter of Marjorie Pearson. They moved to Louisiana. At the time of his death, Henry was one of the last surviving soldiers from the Confederate Army living in Louisiana.
